Double Page Spread

Language: The Main image is on the left so it is the first thing the reader will see, it is also in black and white so it stands out from the yellow background and as this splash of colour is from behind them, it will stick in the readers mind.
The bands name is in bold so you can clearly tell which band this article is about.
The first letter of the paragraph is in bold, and enlarged, this stands out.
The title is larger than anything so this will yet again stand out, it also isnt just one colour, but 3, a different aproach.

Institution: The organisation is Kerrang! The logo is very well known so from a far the readers would clearly be able to know that it is in fact Kerrang! You can clearly see that the main image is of of Muse as this is labelled above the image. As he is in a well known band a lot of people and this band is indeed very successful, it is clear that Kerrang! must be very successful on its own to be able to afford them to star in a photo-shoot, to write an article on them.. In-dictating this organisation is very wealthy.

Audience: The audience of the magazine seems to be teenagers known as it gives the readers a lot of insight detail on their favourite band members. This article is about Muse, so obviously this double page spread will draw in muse lovers from all over.
Representation: The logo of the band is clearly written on the double page spread so we can tell that this article is about Muse. The band is in black and white, this stands out as they are on a yellow background. They are all wearing leather jackets, so they look similar. Journey to the Loon is written at the top of the page so this is the title of the article, it is in black, red and blue. So the readers attention will be drawn to this. It is separated into clear paragraphs too, easy and clear to read.

Contents

Language
Subheadings clearly separate the contents page.
Issue number is clearly labelled so the reader can tell which one they are missing, and if they are up to date.
Page numbers are clearly labelled so readers can easily note which page they are interested in.
Band names are in bold so they stand out easily.
Editors note is left at the bottom, this makes the reader feel involved, and as if he is speaking directly to them.

Institution: The organisation is Kerrang! The logo is very well known so from a far the readers would clearly be able to know that it is infact Kerrang! You can clearly see this by the use of the  main image. It is a picture of the new film to be coming out; known as 'Sinister'. We can tell it is a successful magazine as they are offering some viewers to be in a private movie screening of this film. This is rare, and you can tell that Kerrang! will of been paid a lot to advertise this as their main article on the contents page, again, in-dictating this organisation is very wealthy.

Audience: The audience of the magazine seems to be teenagers known as it gives the readers a lot of insight detail on their favourite band members. As the magazine is about a lot of different bands not just one in particular. This means that it is more appealing to a wider range of people.

Representation: The colours used are of reds and blacks this is a typical convention of 'rock and roll'. The format is clear with where the articles are placed within the magazine, the heading are clearly set out with page numbers, and the features have sub headings splitting it all up.

Cover

Language:  There are all the conventions used on this cover, for example:
The barcode is clear in the corner of the magazine, with issue number and the date. This tells the reader which issue they could have missed and if they are up to date with Kerrang!
The skyline is filled with added little information for the reader to pick up on.
Quotes from articles are used to draw readers in from different band lovers.
Posters are given away in each issue so this entices certain readers to buy the magazine.
The title is clear, and the same font on each magazine so it is clear to see straight away that it is infact Kerrang!

The main image has a pull quote and the bands name.

Institution: The organisation is Kerrang! The logo is very well known so from a far the readers would clearly be able to know that it is infact Kerrang! You can clearly see that the main image is of of Muse as this is labeled beneath the image. As he is in a well known band a lot of people and this band is indeed very successful, it is clear that Kerrang! must be very successful on its own to be able to afford them to star on the front of the magazine. In-dictating this organisation is very wealthy.

'Kerrang is the original multimedia platform boasting magazine, online, radio, TV,K! Awards, K! Tour, and K! Podcasts' - Media Pack

Ideology: The attitude of the magazine seems to be different all over the cover due to the fact that Matt(Middle) is smiling, most probably laughing. Christopher(Right) is also laughing, maybe a joke within the band? Dominic(Left) however is pointing forward, so maybe a joke was within the band, but it was based about him, and maybe he however does not find it funny. As to why he is pointing forward, at the audience, as if to tell us not to laugh too. The main image normally determines what the attitude of the magazine on this given issue, but on this current one it doesnt seem to actually give one; this may be due to the fact that it has a lot of different things inside which means the image represents this as it doesnt lean towards a specific attitude.
'Kerrang! partnered with Paco Rabanne to promote Black XS with a cross media campaign to give readers the chance to enter their bands to win a recording deal with Search&Destory Records.' - Bauer Media Pack

Audience: The audience of the magazine seems to be teenagers known as it gives the readers a lot of insight detail on their favourite band members. As the magazine is about a lot of different bands not just one in particular. This means that it is more appealing to a wider range of people.

'Kerrang! Each issue will include a balance of bands and scenes to guarantee that we're providing for our readers' need for variety and their passionate appetite for their favourite bands as well as their desire to be introduced to NEW MUSIC within our world - James McMahon  – Editor' Media Pack

'We will focus on the BIGGEST things that are going on in our world each week, as well as guaranteeing that we are giving our main base on younger readers everything they need to get into, on top of this the interest in older, harder bands, cementing our role as an educator.' - Media Pack

Representation: The colours used are of reds and blacks this is a typical convention of 'rock and roll', this fits with the models used in the main image as they are wearing the colour black. The models around the outside are also wearing some black too. The main image is clear as to which article it fits with, and the sub articles are the same. It is clear and easy to understand. The skyline almost looks as if it is used as the sky, and Mike Duce and Billie Joe Armstrong are the little planes in the sky that have messages following behind them.

Currently, in the top 40 Download there are only 3 artists in the Genre that my music Magazine is aimed at. That is only 7.5% of the top 40.

Overall, that is hardly anything. Is this due to the fact that most people do not know what bands are under the rock genre? Is it because Pop dominates our screens, our charts, our lives? I am producing my magazine to help Rock get its name back, it's rightful place back in the charts. To become well known, and well published.

Market research; contents

These front covers all have things in common with conventions. They all have page numbers that are in bold. They all carry the colour theme from the front cover through to the contents page. They all have headings to separate the article up, they also have a little note somewhere on the main image to tell the reader who the photo is, and where there article is within the magazine. They all have the issue number and date of the issue in the header where the title and contents are. They all have a note about the subscription to the magazine itself too, including the price of the magazine. The titles of the sub articles are all in bold and stand out from the text beneath explaining. Two have Editor notes detailing what this issue is about and how hard the employers worked to try and get the best out of the articles that they could.

Market Research; Front Covers

The conventions these three music magazines have in common are that they all have large titles that are clearly visible that stands out from the rest of the text. They all have the main articles name second largest so it is easy for the reader to see which band this issue is about. Incorporated into the barcode is the price of the magazine and the website. They all have at least 3 colours that run throughout the cover, mostly being red white and black. They all have pull quotes that go with their main article to draw the reader in. They all have cover lines down the right side. They all have a header at the top of the magazine which is normally either about the magazine itself, or some other artists included in the magazine. The main images of all three magazines are set on a white background, this is most probably because it makes it easier for things to stand out.

Front cover mock up
This is my mock up of the contents page, that if I were to produce it as a final product I would use this as a template to lay out all of my images and information.

LIIAR:
L : Language: The language is completed on the photo.

I: Institution: The organisation of the magazine is Kerrang! This is shown by the picture in the
top left hand corner by the picture of the previous issue, where Kerrang! Can be clearly seen. The organisation can be seen as successful because they have used a lot of well known successful money making bands. This shows they have put a lot of money into the magazine and they can afford to put on numerous photo shoots with bands.

I: Ideology: The attitude of the article seems to be serious, every image of the bands is very serious and looks like they are down to business, ready to get to work. Every artist looks stern, staring the camera down. Looking through the page, into the readers eyes. Almost as if they are trying to communicate with the reader.

A: Audience: The audience is particularly teenagers, or people who listen to rock, metal and pop rock genres of music. The magazine doesn't just appeal to one type of band fan girls it appeals to a lot of different fans.
This magazine is a good example of a college magazine. This is because it has all the conventions of a normal magazine, for example: Bar code  main image, title, masthead, pull quotes. The colours used stand out again the image is of blacks and whites which are quite plain so it easy to get a colour to stand out nicely, pulling the reader in to read this magazine.
The model is holding law society books which obviously show off the subjects that the student is taking, but also some of the courses that are available to people who apply. This is good as it shows people who do not attend the college, what courses are available.
The main topic is in bold letters, and the text is slightly larger than the rest, so this is clear to anyone that this is the main story of the magazine. Some of the quotes are the same colour as the Title of the magazine, this means that these articles could infact be the major ones of the magazine, and this is why it is presented this way.
Overall this example is effective and good. The small print on his jacket is hard to read so this could be changed, but apart from that, the rest is really good.
My college mood board which helped to give me ideas for my college magazine. These helped to give me many initial ideas.

Existing College magazines.
These gave me ideas for how to lay them out, what sub topics I could use, and the style of magazine to go with. This helped a lot as I now know what layout I am going to use, and how to arrange it on the page.
Examples of Camera shots.                               One from the internet:

One from my own images:

These will help me to choose which angle to use, but as the task says a Medium close up must be used, it gave me ideas which lead me off course which wasn't too great.

L : Language: The language is completed on the photo.

I: Institution: The organisation of the magazine is Kerrang! and again on this double page spread they are using 30STM. This looks like it had been done at a photo shoot which means that they have spent a lot of money on this article. This also means that they are a successful money making organisation as they can afford to spend a lot of money on one article.

I: Ideology: The attitude of the article seems to be very focused and and staring the camera down, looking straight into the readers eyes. Possibly making them believe they have an instant connection as soon as they turn the page. As they read the band members are still staring at them, as if watching their every move.

A: Audience: The audience of the magazine seems to be teenagers known as 'fan girls' as it gives the readers a lot of insight detail on their favourite band members. As the magazine is about a lot of different bands not just one in particular. This means that it is more appealing to a wider range of people, and not just one type of band in general.

R: Representation: The way things are portrayed are as if they text is avoiding the models, trying to stay away from them, as if separated by a barrier. This fits with the look of the models and they clothes they are wearing.

LIIAR:
Language: The language is completed on the photo.
I: Institution: The organisation is Kerrang! The logo is well known so from a far the readers would clearly be able to know that it is infact Kerrang! You can clearly see that the main image is of Jared Leto. As he is in a big band that is known by a lot of people and this band is indeed very successful, it is clear that Kerrang! must be very successful on its own to be able to afford Jared to star on the front of the magazine. In-dictating this organisation is very wealthy.

I: Ideology: The attitude of the magazine seems to be stern and focused. He looks like hes about to have a fight, due to the position of his hands. He looks like hes staring the camera down ready for a battle. This ties in with 'I could be your worst enemy' almost as if, do something wrong to Jared and you'll have a fight on your hands.

A: Audience: The audience of the magazine seems to be teenagers known as 'fan girls' as it gives the readers a lot of insight detail on their favourite band members. As the magazine is about a lot of different bands not just one in particular. This means that it is more appealing to a wider range of people.

R: Representation: The magazine seems to be portrayed around a fight. The way Jared is stood, the position of his hands, and the splashes of red around the magazine all imply anger, or blood. There is a dark box in front of his body, but behind his hands, with the band's name inside it. This seems to be almost like a boxing fight, when they announce the sides of the match normally on T.V the name of the boxer flashes across the screen in this style.
